Our Independent Living Service
Independent Living is our domiciliary support service for individuals with ASD who live in their own homes (eg as tenants in Supported Living accommodation) or who live with their family.

The service has been running since 2003 and offers autism-specific, person-centred domiciliary care in Bromley and neighbouring South East London boroughs.

We offer:

  • flexible, person-centred support between 7am and 10pm, seven days a week.
  • support with daily skills such as budgeting, shopping, cooking and cleaning.
  • motivation around personal care and developing self esteem.
  • support to develop social and leisure activities and interests.
  • support to access educational and work opportunities.

What our clients say about Independent Lifestyles

“Independent Lifestyles gives me a chance to get out and about to places of my interest. The service works well for me and I really enjoy my support sessions” - DK

“Independent Lifestyles can improve your life. I recommend BAT for a better life. I find them very helpful and I have gained confidence and independence” - MT

Referrals
We welcome referrals from the Community Learning Disability Team, from Oxleas or other mental health teams, from charities such as Mencap or Bromley & Bexley Advocacy, and also from families and individuals themselves.

The support can be funded through social services, mental health teams, direct payments or paid privately by the individuals themselves.

Eligibility
Assessments for suitability for the service are completed by the Independent Lifestyles Manager.

The service is for people who have an ASD. They need not always have a formal diagnosis, but would be expected to have social and communication difficulties characteristic of ASD, which make it harder for them to lead satisfying lives without specialist support.

Our Supported Living Accommodation Service
We offer supported living services to adults living in dedicated supported living schemes across Bromley and Bexley. Service users have their own tenancy in supported living accommodation.

Each service user in our Supported Living schemes needs a different level of support, to be decided after an assessment of their needs. All tenants can expect support with

domestic and financial skills, including cooking, cleaning, budgeting and shopping;

personal development and socialising, including eg help in finding courses, full- or part-time work, voluntary work, healthy eating, developing new friendship groups and visiting places of interest.

All tenants decide their own daytime activities.

In 2008 we opened a 5-person supported living scheme, Winsford House, for adults who have diagnoses of ASD and learning disability and who were returning to the London Borough of Bromley from out-of-borough placements. The service works on a person-centred basis and offers 24-hour support to the tenants. The house is staffed through the night.

Norman Antenbring House opened in 2009 in partnership with Bexley PCT and BECHA. The house has been beautifully refurbished and divided into 5 self-contained flats. The tenants have diagnoses of ASD and mental health issues.

In Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, a beautiful Edwardian house owned by Birnbeck Housing Association provides more Supported Living accommodation. The tenants here have their own bedrooms and share a large kitchen, dining room, sitting room and bathroom.

We also offer supported living services within smaller single and dual occupancy flats throughout Bromley.

What our clients say about their Supported Living accommodation:

“While here I’ve grown as a person and learnt essential life skills that I was lacking at home. I’m far more capable and confident. It has also enabled me to become more comfortable with and come to terms with my Asperger’s... The space is nice too!” - G

“The staff are friendly and really get alongside me to help and support me with different things” - T
