Complex Communication Service (CCS)
Introduction
Children are referred to the Complex Communication Service (CCS) because of concern that they have Social Communication Difficulties.
The CCS brings together a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, who are experienced in the diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other communication difficulties, eg Language Disorder
The Assessment Process
The core components of the assessment are;
- A paediatric and developmental assessment. Certain tests may be requested and referrals made to other professionals.
- A detailed semi-structured interview or Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI)
- An assessment by a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist or Clinical Psychologist
- An observation session, based on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). This will be carried out in the nursery/school, Phoenix Centre or other clinics. It is often video taped. In some cases it may be useful to have the observation done using a one-way mirror so that parents and other team members can observe the session as well. The interview and observation complement one another to give a more accurate assessment of your child's difficulties
- Feedback explains the assessment finding and diagnosis. Usually, a minimum of two members of the CCS team will be present and representatives from nursery/school and the Family Services Worker from the Bromley Autistic Trust will also be invited
- A written report will be sent to the parents/carers and, with their permission, to others if relevant
