Most people aspire to constructive and valued activities through the day, either through their job, or voluntary activities. For people with autism who have additional difficulties in structuring their own time this is particularly important. Whilst some residents continue to attend Local Authority day centres, for others this is not the most appropriate provision. In response to this need, in March 1999 BAT established a small day service in Chislehurst which offered individualised, specialist day provision. This has now expanded and has moved to Bromley .

The degree to which people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders are affected varies, but all of them need help to improve their social, communication and daily living skills and to enable them to become as independent as possible. A programme of training and education is offered which helps to reduce the high levels of anxiety often prevalent in autism. This anxiety can easily lead to the kind of challenging behaviour often associated with the syndrome.

Facilities and Support

The Day Service consists of a workshop with fenced garden to the rear within a residential community. There is also an allotment nearby in which horticultural training can take place.

We aim to provide a specialised centre, with staff trained and experienced in understanding autistic needs, who are able to help each person to learn and to integrate into the community.

Specialist instructors come in to teach subjects such as Art and Information Technology on a sessional basis. The Day Service, registered with the National Proficiency Tests Council, delivers accredited courses in IT, Horticulture, Independent Living, Literacy and Numeracy. The Day Service has been designed specifically to meet the wide range of needs evident in people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

Referrals

Applications will be considered from adults aged 19 and over who come within the continuum of autism and require the kind of specialist care the Trust provides.
